Sacramento Creative Writing Nonprofit 916 Ink Launches Virtual Summer Camps

SACRAMENTO CREATIVE WRITING NONPROFIT 916 INK LAUNCHES VIRTUAL SUMMER CAMPS

Helps Students and Parents Combat the Summer Learning Slide, Safely

[SACRAMENTO, CA, May 19, 2020] - Registration for 916 Ink's "Amplify! Creative Writing Summer Camp" is now open for virtual camp sessions starting in June for students in grades 3rd through 8th. 916 Ink is also investigating the possibility of modified in-person sessions later in the summer.

As more parents begin returning to work but schools are out for the summer, parents need enriching activities that their children will enjoy. Programs like 916 Ink's "Amplify! Creative Writing Summer Camp" can help students and parents combat the summer learning slide, when students lose an average of 2 months of learning during the summer months. 916 Ink's workshops are proven to improve a student's literacy skills; more than half of its students showed improvement towards grade-level writing standards after one workshop series. Additionally, 85% showed improved attitudes toward writing and 90% showed improved social/emotional skills, important outcomes to note during this time of heightened stress and anxiety.

Sessions are free for families living in the Sacramento Promise Zone, a designation encompassing 22 square miles of Sacramento's most vulnerable neighborhoods. According to the website for the Sacramento Promise Zone, "More than 30% of residents in the Promise Zone have yet to achieve a high school diploma or GED." To find out whether one lives within the Promise Zone, visit https://www.sacramentopromisezone.org.

For families outside of the Promise Zone, registration is $100 for virtual Zoom sessions and is open now. Students in these sessions will write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction with 916 Ink staff and guest artists. They will engage in a virtual workshop with fellow writers, learning to engage playfully with language. Each session will include writing prompts and various activities such as spoken word, rhyme activities, collaborative story-telling, and word games. For a personalized experience, class sizes are limited to 15 students.

As 916 Ink Executive Director Ian Hadley said, “Inspiring hope, connection, and positivity through creative self-expression has never been more needed. We have been busy over at 916 Ink adapting and innovating to continue reaching youth who may feel disconnected during this time.”

Registration is still open for in-person sessions, but because of the rapidly changing nature of the current environment, 916 Ink is not yet accepting payment. Parents will be invoiced on July 1 if 916 Ink is certain that the in-person sessions can be held safely. If in-person sessions are held, numerous safety protocols will be in place, in line with CDC and County recommendations.
