916 Ink empowers youth to become authors of their own lives, one published story at a time. Through our creative writing workshops, 916 Ink inspires youth to seize life’s opportunities as they grow confident in understanding their unique voices and the stories of others. 916 Ink strives to engage youth writers, K-12th grade, in a whimsical environment with inspirational and thought-provoking creative writing prompts. Writing workshops are taken at the 916 Ink Imaginarium and/or at public schools, nonprofits, and youth detention facilities in the Greater Sacramento region.

Position Description:

The Development Associate (DA) assists the Executive Director (ED) to implement 916 Ink’s fund development plan in coordination with the 916 Ink board, a contracted Grants Coordinator, and a contracted Creative Director. 916 Ink’s 2016-2017 budget is $700,000, and in 2017, 916 Ink will impact over 2,000 low-income and marginalized youth with free creative writing workshops that will transform students into confident writers and published authors. 916 Ink is known in Sacramento as an out-of-the-box nonprofit because of its attention to creativity, whimsy, and playful engagement.

The DA will join the organization during a period of strategic growth, anticipating that 916 Ink will be a 1.6-million-dollar organization, serving more than 8,500 youth per year by 2020. Building on 916 Ink’s current successes, the DA will fundraise by focusing on innovative and fun giving campaigns, cultivating and stewarding current (and new) funders, grant-writing, implementing a planned giving/bequest program, and by using storytelling to create tailored messages about 916 Ink’s impact to a variety of audiences. 


  • Under the guidance of the Executive Director and with the assistance of the contracted Grants Coordinator, help write grants
  • Assist in the management of 916 Ink’s three giving campaigns: The Big Day of Giving, end of year appeal, and “Use Your Words” social media campaign
  • Secure matching funds for campaigns through grant writing and fundraising
  • Cultivate and steward individual donors; and create and maintain good relations with foundations
  • Drive 916 Ink’s storytelling strategies on social media, through the print and email newsletter, and in person, to grow 916 Ink’s donor/funder pool while raising awareness about 916 Ink’s mission and vision
  • Identify and pursue donor engagement opportunities, which may include speaking engagements and attending networking events
  • Give tours of the 916 Ink Imaginarium for donors and funders as needed and attend 916 Ink’s book release parties with donors and funders as necessary
  • Leverage current funding streams at 916 Ink to help grow income streams
  • Coordinate the quarterly “Inker News” print and online newsletter with the 916 Ink Creative Director and staff
  • Assist the 916 Ink Creative Director and Director of Operations with promoting 916 Ink merchandise (over 70 youth written anthologies and other 916 Ink literary swag)
  • Utilize NEON CRM to maintain donor records, IRS receipts, and campaigns
  • Support 916 Ink in strengthening the fund development plan by continuously capturing and reporting data, along with donor and funder input to the Executive Director and 916 Ink Board
  • Assist with the Walk 4 Literacy
  • Assist in the development and implementation of a planned giving/bequest program
  • Interface with corporate giving programs, such as United Way, AT&T, Our Promise California, SMUD, and others
  • Collaborate with the 916 Ink Volunteer and Outreach coordinator for small events that yield less than $1000 as needed


  • Minimum of three years of work experience in a fast-paced organization, including at least two years of fundraising, donor relations, grant writing, and/or public speaking
  • Stellar communication and public speaking skills
  • Stellar writing skills with proven track record of winning grants
  • Entrepreneurial, resourceful, and persistent, with demonstrated success managing and inspiring individuals and teams toward ambitious, measurable results
  • Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to analyze data, recognize trends, and drive strategic recommendations
  • Significant relationship and/or client management experience; excellent leadership presence and client building skills, with focus on details and follow through deep understanding that donors and funders are deserving of extreme, enthusiastic, and sincere gratitude, combined with a desire to express that gratitude often and in creative ways
  • Strong public speaking and interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate a wide variety of people; intuitive, empathic communicator who can quickly build rapport, trust, and credibility
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and entrepreneurship; open to change, learning, and improvement
  • A sincere and deep commitment to the fundamental belief that every child deserves a chance to have their voice and/or stories heard and pronounced
  • Views differences between individuals (race, gender, age, cultural heritage, physical ability, education, and lifestyle) as an asset, and demonstrates an appreciation of this diversity
  • Able to travel throughout the greater Sacramento region
  • Flexibility of schedule during regular M-F business hours, understanding that the position requires attendance, although infrequently, during evenings and weekends
  • Bachelor’s degree (or degree in progress) required, or equivalent experience
  • Employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory criminal background check, conducted by 916 Ink

Salary: Begins at $40,000 annually and may be negotiable based on experience.
